Project Location and Limits
The project is located on 16th Street from just east of Harlem Avenue (IL 43) to Lombard Avenue. The project will have an omission at Oak Park Avenue for approximately 76.7 feet. The total gross length is 6,796.5 feet and the net length of the project is 6,719.8 feet and is in the City of Berwyn. 16th Street is a two-way roadway classified as a Major Collector with a speed of 25 mph and an ADT of approximately 9,500 vehicles per day.
Proposed Improvements
This project includes roadway milling and resurfacing, traffic signal improvements, permeable paver installation, curb and gutter removal and replacement, sidewalk removal and replacement, combined sewer repair and lining, pavement marking, tree plantings, and final restoration. This work will typically include:
- Mill and overlay of Hot Mix Asphalt pavement.
- The green infrastructure additions of continuous tree pit soil systems, with new trees and tree grates, along with parking stalls with permeable paver installation.
- Handicap parking stalls with Portland Cement Concrete pavement.
- Sidewalk removal and replacement
- ADA compliant sidewalk ramps at intersections.
- New storm sewer along 16th Street, that will tie into the combination sewer.
- Temporary traffic signals, along with proposed traffic signal modernization at 16th Street and Wenonah Ave, 16th Street and East Avenue, and 16th Street and Richland Ave.
- New Traffic signal at 16th Street and Gunderson Ave.
- Fire hydrant adjustments.
- Valve box adjustments.
- Spot repair combination sewer along 16th Street.
- Landscape restoration.
- Trash receptacles and benches
- Install new pavement markings, along with bike symbol pavement markings.
What To Expect
The construction operations, along 16th Street will likely create delays in travel, and motorists should allow extra time through the area. One-way traffic is anticipated during the project. Access to all homes and businesses will be maintained, however, there will inevitably be delays encountered throughout the project. As with any construction project, there will occasionally be inconveniences you may experience when traveling through the area, but the City and Contractor are working together to minimize the disruptions and nuisances.
Schedule
This project is anticipated to begin September of 2026 and be substantially complete by September of 2027.
Weather and unforeseen circumstances may adversely affect the proposed schedule.
In accordance with the City of Berwyn ordinance, daily working hours for the construction project are from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays, and 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekends. There is currently no work anticipated on Sundays or major legal Holidays.
